The kistka is a tool which is used to decorate the egg. Wax is melted through the small funnel and applied to the egg.  A duck egg is hollowed and prepared to be "written" on with a kistka.

Hot wax is applied with the kistka to all of the areas intended to remain white.

For the green areas, dye is painted on to the egg with a brush, then covered in wax.

The egg is dipped in a first dye bath. Pink is the first in a series of colors. More wax is applied to all areas intended to remain pink.

The next dye bath is purple. All sections of the egg to remain purple are again covered in wax. The next in the color series is dark blue and then black.

More wax has been added to all of the areas intended to remain blue. The egg will be finished with black dye.

The final stage before the wax is melted off. Three coats of a clear gloss will be applied.

This is the finished egg, wax has been melted and finish has been applied.  The iris design was applied to both sides of the egg with a decorative band running down the middle.
